The Indian Institute of Metals, Durgapur Chapter was set up in 1961 mainly by the efforts of Late Dr. G P Chaterjee, Chief Metallurgist, Durgapur Steel Plant. Presently, the Chapter has around 450 members from academia, research organizations, manufacturing industries and Steel Plants covering Durgapur and its’ adjoining areas.
The metallurgical industry is one where innovation takes place almost every day. Most of the members of IIM Durgapur Chapter are either directly or indirectly involved in pursuit of these developments.
The Chapter is among few which have its’ own building. It is a two storey building known as Dhatu Bhawan.
The main achievement of the Chapter is the AMIIM Half Yearly examinations conducted by IIM Headquarters in June and December every year which the chapter is organizing for more than 10 years. The Chapter caters to the needs of aspiring students from nearby places like Bokaro, Rourkela, Burnpur, Jamshedpur and others. For last 3-4 years, for the comfort of students who pass the examinations, the viva voce also is held at the Chapter.
To recognize the efforts made by young metallurgists’ working in industries, research organization, laboratories etc. the Chapter felicitates them on the occasion of its’ Annual Day.
